CAER Eye Exams (OFA/CERF)

Dr. Bromberg offers Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) exams, which are standardized screenings used to detect inherited eye conditions in dogs. These exams are especially important for breeders, kennel clubs, veterinary hospitals and organizations.

During a CAER exam, the dog’s pupils are gently dilated with eye drops so that the entire eye can be examined thoroughly. The exam is non-invasive, quick, and well-tolerated by most dogs. At the conclusion of the visit, owners receive an official OFA certification form, documenting the results.

CAER exams are provided only through scheduled clinic events and not as individual appointments.

Relief Work for Clinics & Colleges

With decades of experience in both clinical practice and teaching, Dr. Bromberg provides relief coverage for veterinary ophthalmology practices and veterinary colleges. This allows clinics and universities to maintain continuity of care and teaching standards when their full-time ophthalmologist is unavailable.

Her relief services include performing exams, diagnostic procedures, and surgical interventions as needed, always with the same professionalism and expertise that has defined her career. Coverage is available on a limited basis throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s the difference between a CAER exam and a regular eye exam?
A CAER exam is a screening exam designed to check for inherited eye diseases in dogs, especially for breeders, kennel clubs, veterinary hospitals and organizations. It does not include diagnosis or treatment of medical eye problems. A full ophthalmic exam is needed if your dog is experiencing symptoms.

Q: How long does a CAER exam take?
Most CAER exams are quick and non-invasive, usually taking less than 20 minutes, though your dog’s pupils will be dilated with eye drops, which may cause temporary light sensitivity.

Q: How often should my dog have a CAER exam?
For breeding dogs, CAER exams are recommended annually to ensure no new inherited eye issues have developed. Service and working dogs may also benefit from yearly exams to ensure their vision remains clear and healthy.

Q: Where can my dog get a CAER exam with Dr. Bromberg?
Dr. Bromberg provides CAER exams only at scheduled clinic events. You can check upcoming dates and locations on the Calendar & Schedule page.

Q: What if my dog has an eye problem during the exam?
If a potential medical issue is found, Dr. Bromberg will advise you to schedule a full ophthalmic exam with a veterinary ophthalmologist for diagnosis and treatment.

Q: Does Dr. Bromberg see cats or other animals?
While CAER exams are primarily for dogs, Dr. Bromberg has extensive experience with a variety of species—including exotic animals at the National Zoo. For certification, however, CAER exams are limited to dogs.

Q: Can clinics or organizations request her services?
Yes. Dr. Bromberg is available for relief ophthalmology work at veterinary practices and colleges, and she also collaborates with nonprofits for pro bono services. Interested organizations can reach out via the Contact page.
